When we exercise, our muscles, heart, brain, and immune system communicate through a complex network of chemical messengers. Exercise influences several important hormones and signalling molecules that affect how our cells grow, repair themselves, and respond to disease.

Some hormones can stimulate cell growth when present at persistently high levels. For example, estrogen and other sex hormones play a role in the development of certain hormone-sensitive cancers.

Regular physical activity can help maintain healthier hormone levels and improve body composition, particularly by reducing excess body fat. Fat tissue is metabolically active and can contribute to hormone production and chronic inflammation. By maintaining a healthy weight and improving hormonal balance, exercise may help reduce the risk of several cancers.

A physically active lifestyle has been associated with a lower risk of several types of cancer. Evidence is particularly strong for cancers such as colon, breast, and endometrial cancer, with growing evidence for benefits in several other cancer sites. The biological effects of exercise include improvements in hormones, insulin metabolism, inflammation, immune function, and body weight.

It is important to understand that exercise reduces risk—it does not provide complete protection against cancer. Cancer is a complex disease influenced by genetics, age, tobacco, infections, environmental exposures, diet, and many other factors. Nevertheless, physical activity is one of the most effective lifestyle measures we can adopt to improve long-term health.


Exercise Protects Against More Than Cancer

The benefits of regular exercise extend throughout the body. Physical activity can help prevent or manage:

Consistency is more important than intensity. The best exercise is often the one you enjoy enough to continue for years.


A Special Message for Cancer Patients and Survivors

Exercise can also be beneficial for many people diagnosed with cancer. Depending on the individual's condition and treatment, physical activity may help improve strength, fatigue, mood, physical function, and quality of life. Research also suggests that physically active survivors of certain cancers have better health outcomes than inactive survivors. However, every patient is different, and exercise plans should be individualized, particularly during active cancer treatment.

Always discuss a new or strenuous exercise programme with your treating doctor, especially if you have cancer, heart disease, severe joint problems, uncontrolled medical conditions, or treatment-related complications.
